John Rawls is deemed to be one of the most important philosophers of '900. With his Theory of Justice (1971) he re-founded normative political philosophy, by bringing to the foreground issues of public ethics and of social justice. The texts and comments presented in this introduction to his work aim at providing an exhaustive overview of Rawls' thinking in his multiple dimensions. Special attention is given to the theoretical itinerary that led Rawls to redefine the main concepts of political justice and to view in a new light issues like the welfare state, the conflict between values, the relation between liberal institutions and religious faiths, the role of dissent within democratic societies and the international politics of liberal states. As a solution to this dilemma, I propose the view that equal respect is a procedural principle of democracy because it requires to treat and publicly represent citizens as equally capable of making apt political choices, while not assuming that they actually are.
