Since 2005, a monitoring program was carried out to characterize stormwater runoff from paved surfaces of commercial ports and airports in the Liguria region (Italy). The instrumented catchments were monitored for hydrology, chemistry and particulate loads. Results demonstrate the relevance of the pollutant load from shipping port terminals when compared with urban areas. In particular, the study aims at assessing the potential toxicity of metals on the aquatic ecosystems and the efficiency of BMPs. Thus metal partitioning between the particle-bound and dissolved fractions, together with the aqueous species distribution of each metal, were investigated. The trend in metal partitioning was analysed using the partitioning coefficient kd while speciation was determined by using the thermodynamic equilibrium model MINTEQ.
