Abstract

This paper describes still ongoing research activities carried out in cooperation by the Dept. of Naval Architecture and Marine Technologies (DINAV) of the University of Genova and the Perini Navi shipyard, one of the few ones in the world launching very large sailing yachts. Structural monitoring systems of mast and rigging performances were designed, built and installed onboard large sail ships during several sea trials. The measurements were used for the calibration of analytical and numerical models currently used in the design process resulting in a significant improvement of both the mast and the rigging performances.
