This study analyzes the problems that can arise in the development of bilingual from monolingual dictionaries, a technique usually applied by current authors and publishers. It studies, specifically and with a metalexicographical approach, the systematization of entries, the labelling definitions and meanings as well as the grammatical information, showing that the errors in the monolingual sources are usually transferred to the bilingual dictionaries. The study focuses also on the development of Spanish and Italian verb headwords, in order to demonstrate that the two grammars’ long standing traditions cannot be followed in a bilingual dictionary without taking into account the needs of different users.
