Analytical jurisprudence represents one of the major traditions in Western legal philosophy. The book, the first one of a two-volumes set (the second being now a work in progress), purports to provide a historical and theoretical account of the basic steps in the development of analytical legal thinking, from the pathbreaking works of Jeremy Bentham, at the end of the XVIIIth century, to John Austin’s “philosophy of positive law”, to the pure theory of law of Hans Kelsen, perhaps the most important legal philosopher of the XXth century. The thought of analytical jurisprudents is not recounted in isolation from other major developments in legal thinking from the XVIIth to the XIXth century. Ideas from Hobbes, Pufendorf, Leibniz, the French jurists of the Exegetical School, Savigny, Jhering, Thon, Merkel and Windscheid are considered in turn, in order to provide the philosophical and doctrinal benchmark needed to grasp the specificities of the analytical approach to the law. A Spanish translation of the book is going to be published (El enfoque análitico en la filosofía del derecho. I. De Bentham a Kelsen, Lima, 2012).
