David Chiossone (1820-1873), literary critic, dramatist, patriot and hygienist, is one of the intellectual figures important at the local level in the age of Italian Risorgimento, but also in the wider national scene. In the role of municipal administrator, Chiossone confronts its project of social ethics, founded on the ideals of the fatherland, science and solidarity with the concrete problems of Genoa, a town in industrial and urban expansion at the beginnings of Italy's united Kingdom. The reconstruction of his intellectual and personal biography, conducted through the study of his literary, dramatic, political and scientific works and the analysis of numerous archival documentary sources, is another piece of the history of Italian national culture, in relation to contemporary post romantic and positivistic thinking. In the volume is also published for the first time a collection of autograph letters by D. Chiossone and a complete bibliography of his works. The compact disk attached contains, in addition to the text of book, the drama “Heart of a Sailorman”, one of the best-known plays by David Chiossone; images of Chiossone autograph letters; a photographic journey in Genoa at the nineteenth century and today; two patriotic hymns and lyrics written by him. All materials are accessible to the visually impaired.
