The conceptual and operating tools of this discipline allow us to interpret the “signs” that people engraved on buildings during the past time. Furthermore the archaeology of architecture faces a crucial question: if an architect chooses the conservation as his philosophy, what is the true object of the conservation itself? In this book the author first describes and compares the various way to analyse and dating ancient buildings, then discusses the relationships between data and their historical interpretations, finally tries to clarify why the knowledge of ancient buildings stratification is necessary to preserve them.
