Departing from the analysis of the Italian mass emigration, the essay treats the literary texts that, from the unity of Italy to twenteeth century have faced this theme, both in the form of the novel (from Sull’Oceano of De Amicis to Quando Dio ballava il tango of Pariani), and in that poetic (from Italy of Pascoli to the most recent lyric of Zinna and Biasio); but if the literary works are a little numerous exclusively devote to this matter, it results here instead occasionally faced and in marginal way from our greatest writers of the nineteenth century: from Pirandello to Soldati, from Pavese to Sciascia, from Rigoni Stern to Magris that often in the measure of the story have represented the different typologies of the emigration, also in relationship in the different centers of departure and arrival and giving place both to a seam of celebration of the "American myth", both to a strong antiamericanism.
