The book deals with water supply in Genova in the contemporary period, with specific attention to the history of the main private companies, both founded in the XIXth century. The study is based on a research work in the companies archives and in the archive of the city council; even the scientific literature Italian and European on the topic is of course considered. However a business history approach is dominant, questions as the growth of water consumption, linked to changes in living standard of the population, the technological progress, crucial for the improvement in wealth conditions, the political and administrative problem of the regulation of the networks of public utilities are continuously examined.
