The book is focused on the relationship between architectural theory and doctrine of the passions in the French culture between seventeenth and eighteenth-century. This kind of issue stands on the edge between architectural history and history of ideas. Thirst, contempt, jealousy, fear, anger, hatred, esteem, admiration ... are the passions that the Western philosophical tradition has studied, cataloged, organized into hierarchies and systems. The passions of the soul and body, in fact, with their explosive power over man and their irrational charge have since long time been subject of an endless research. In France between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the treatise on the passions became a trend-setter for the theory of art and architecture. Boullee, Quatremère, Ledoux, Briseux intertwine their disciplinary knowledge with the scientific arrangement of the passions that dominates the culture of agé classique. / Il libro è dedicato al rapporto fra dottrina delle passioni e teoria architettonica nella cultura francese seicentesca e settecentesca. Si tratta di un tema di confine tra storia dell’architettura e storia delle idee. La sete, il disprezzo, la gelosia, la paura, la collera, l’odio, la stima, l’ammirazione…sono le passioni che la tradizione filosofica occidentale ha studiato, catalogato, strutturato in gerarchie e in sistemi. Le passioni dell’anima e del corpo, infatti, con il loro dirompente potere sull’uomo e con la loro carica irrazionale, sono state da sempre oggetto di un’instancabile ricerca. Nella Francia tra seicento e settecento il trattato sulle passioni diviene un riferimento ineludibile per la teoria dell’arte e dell’architettura.
