Coral fishing has enjoyed significant economic importance. As early as in the late middle ages and until the modern ages, coral fishing was a lucrative business in the seas of Corsica and Sardinia, along the coasts of Tuscany and Sicily, Calabria and Campania, in Provençe and the Balearic islands, as well as along the coasts of Maghreb. The control over areas rich in coral reefs was often highly contentious and, over the centuries, monopolies were alternatively gained by different nationalities. During the long time span from the 16th to the 18th century, Ligurian fishermen played a fundamental role in this type of specialist fishing: they were by far in control of all production phases, from raw coral prospection, to the manufacturing of valuable items.
