During the fifteenth century and then with increasing strenght in later centuries it spread in Europe a conception of urban representation as a practical-operational tool, essential for purposes of governance of urban spaces. In the essay, the author discusses the reasons for this belated assertion (the medieval attitude towards urban images was completely different), distinguishing between 'technical' images drawn for design or administrative purposes (mainly ichnographic plans), and 'pictorial' ones (views, profiles, etc...) that on the contrary were generally completely devoid of practical aims.

Abstract

During the fifteenth century and then with increasing strenght in later centuries it spread in Europe a conception of urban representation as a practical-operational tool, essential for purposes of governance of urban spaces. In the essay, the author discusses the reasons for this belated assertion (the medieval attitude towards urban images was completely different), distinguishing between 'technical' images drawn for design or administrative purposes (mainly ichnographic plans), and 'pictorial' ones (views, profiles, etc...) that on the contrary were generally completely devoid of practical aims.
