The aim of this paper is to chart Lawrence’s fortunes in Italy from his own lifetime through to the present day. Beginning with the writer’s relationship with Pino Orioli and the publication of Lady Chatterley’s Lover (the work with which Lawrence is still most closely associated, especially among general readers), the paper will then go on to discuss Italian translations of his works, from the first edition of his opus published by Mondadori (1947–1975) to the latest publications of his writings. The second part will focus on Lawrence’s critical reception in Italy, ranging from his early Italian critics, for instance Carlo Linati (who met Lawrence and corresponded with him for a while), Mario Praz and the eminent philosopher Benedetto Croce, to later studies of his major novels, travel writing (also involving the famous Etruscologist Massimo Pallottino), poetry and dramatic work. Special attention will be devoted to some recent interdisciplinary studies, including an anthropological approach and one exploring the relationship between his work and the visual arts.
