This essay offers a comparative reflection between the trans-Atlantic journeys of Italian migrants in the past and those of the migrants of the global age. It highlights the different role that the sea “boundary,” takes on over time in migratory projects. Special attention is devoted to the role played by the Italian legislation on immigration which has fostered the definition of the journeys of emigrants as illegal practices.
