At the end of XIXth century, the diffusion of Schopenhauer’s philosophy in France deeply influenced literary production. In his synthesis, Théodule Ribot emphasizes the relationship between the Will, the Thing-in-itself and the Essences, or pure Ideas. Fantastic literature exploits these relations to create short-stories which focus on the Idea as a Being who haunts men and masters them. The “Mercure de France” published many short stories by Gaston Danville based on this subject.
