The volume deals with the trans-Atlantic journey of Italian migrants in historical perspective. It considers both the economic, entrepreneurial, political aspects of the journey (navigation companies, relations between metal and machine industries and the state institutions, migratory politics) and the conditions of the migrants during the crossing (life on board, embarkation and disembarkation conditions). The impact of the experience of the “passage” that the journey represents for migrants has been documented through the writings of emigrants themselves (letters, diaries, memoirs).
