Martin Bucer, the Strasbourg Reformer, was leader of the urban Reformation and proposed a model of pluralistic form of government. This contribution explains the role of Bucer in the political debate of the early modern age and his political ideas. He thought that the christian authorities have powers and tasks "in sachen der religion". So Bucer, since 1527, dedicated his biblical Commentaries to princes and urban magistrates and warned them about their religious and civil duties. During the conflict with Charles V Bucer affirmed that princes and magistrates have duties in defense of the true religion and that they have the right of resistance against the Emperor.

Abstract
