Abstract

This work studies two unpublished sketches drawn by Atnonio Santagata. The subjects represented are:the “Offer” and the “Po’s valley”. The first (oil on canvas, 35x35) is a preparation for the fresco of the apse of Casa Madre del Mutilato in Rome, made between 1926 and 1932; the second one (tempera on grey thin card, cm 26x 15) is a preparation for the fresco made between 1951 and 1953 in the entrance of Eridania Society’s villa in Genova The study on these sketches allows to understand in a better way the main traits of the artist and to locate usual formal used in his activity. With this study it’s possible to analyze his production also in relation with artistic influences and movements in Italy between the ‘30s and about 1950. It allows also to understand his ancient stylistic reference models and allows also to make clear his first activities, thanks to the relation with the architect Riccardo Haupt and the Genoa’s academy, to some paintings still at the first floor of Ex Eridania Societuy’s Villa, where he starts his work after the two year experience of “Pensionato Brignole Sale” in Rome, in 1925. In this critical study about his activities, useful to connect art works realized in different and far times each other, becomes clear the importance of his presence not just in the artistic cultural Genoese scene but also in the Italian scenario of those years.
