By this work we want to point out the support, provided by GPS observations, to the local geoid estimate; this is due to the high precision achieved through these measurements and to the increasing emplyment of these instruments. It is then useful to give a critical analysis of the achieved results, in local geoid estimates, till now, particularly for the Italian geoid, so as to better understand the aim that joint GPS/levelling technique provides to the determination of medium frequency components of geoid undulation.
