In light of the workshop activities carried out in July 2023 in Molise, this paper deals with the complexity of the studies on“middle mountains” in two different Italian territories: an Appennine valley in Eastern Liguria (upper Vara valley [SP])and a municipality in the hinterland of Palermo (Campofelice di Fitalia [PA]). After a short geographical description of the territories, we will focus on the research methodologies adopted in accordance with the residential Laboratory: the Participatory Action Research (PAR) and qualitative analysis methods on territoriality and belongings. Finally, starting from the fieldwork, a discussion of thematic issues will be introduced: “middle mountains”, depopulation, restanza and territoriality.
