Francesco Biamonti e la Guerra d’Algeria. Notizie su un romanzo incompiuto

The Ligurian writer Francesco Biamonti (1928-2001) is best known for his five novels published by Einaudi between 1983 and 2003. This essay investigates the period preceding the writer’s publishing debut, i.e. the long literary ‘ap-prenticeship’ that saw Biamonti, between the late 1950s and the end of the 1970s, working on various projects, all of which were destined to remain unfinished, but nonetheless interesting for understanding the genesis of themes and images characteristic of the novels of his maturity. More specifically, this study deals with the so-called ‘romanzo algerino’, an outline inspired by the events of the Algerian War, of which Biamonti composed several partial drafts. The different compositional phases of this draft, its links with other unfinished Biamonti works (Il testimone inumano and the Romanzo di Gregorio) and its possible literary ancestry are reconstructed here in the light of the manuscripts and typescripts conserved at the writer’s home-archive in San Biagio della Cima, in the Imperia province.

Lo scrittore ligure Francesco Biamonti (1928-2001) è noto soprattutto per i suoi cinque romanzi pubblicati presso Einaudi tra il 1983 e il 2003. Il saggio indaga il periodo che precedette l’esordio editoriale dello scrittore, ovvero il lungo ‘apprendistato’ letterario che vide Biamonti, tra i tardi anni Cinquanta e la fine degli anni Settanta, impegnarsi su diversi progetti romanzeschi, tutti destinati e rimanere incompiuti, ma comunque interessanti per comprendere la genesi di temi e immagini caratteristici dei romanzi della maturità. Più precisamente, questo studio si occupa del cosiddetto ‘romanzo algerino’, un abbozzo ispirato agli eventi della Guerra d’Algeria, del quale Biamonti compose varie stesure parziali. Le diverse fasi compositive di questo abbozzo, i suoi legami con altri incompiuti biamontiani (Il testimone inumano e il Romanzo di Gregorio) e le sue possibili ascendenze letterarie vengono qui ricostruite sulla base dei manoscritti e dattiloscritti conservati presso la casa-archivio dello scrittore a San Biagio della Cima, in pro-vincia di Imperia.
