Abstract

My paper offers an analysis of a Latin text composed by the Dutch scholar Nicolaus Heinsius, dating to the mid-17th century. In 172 elegiac couplets, Heinsius, through a skilful interlocking of motifs and rhetorical structures of classical derivation, offers Aeneas’ response to Dido’s account of their love story in Ovid’s seventh Heroid.
