The article deals with a workshop experience, held at the University of Genoa between 2020 and 2022, aimed at encouraging the assumption of improved awareness concerning music’s pedagogical role, in its aesthetic-artistic nature and in its tension to the generation of culture. Starting from a reflection on the relationship among pedagogy, harmony and music in history, the identity, the purposes and the operating methods of music education are then critically examined. The article focuses on listening, interpretation and production practices. Then, some of the main problems emerging from the practices of pedagogical-musical intervention in the contemporary age are analyzed. They are connected to the deforming auditory stereotypes of mass music and their homologating tendency. Finally, theories and practices are outlined aimed at enhancing, in particular, the link binding music with self-formation, education and the cultural instruction of the human being.
