This article discusses the analysis offered by Max Weber’s in his essays on the sociology of religion, particularly in Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. According to Weber, a particular religious experience, Calvinist ascetic Protestantism, helped generate the modern disposition to rational acquisitive activity, indifferent to ethical motives and essentially irreligious.
