Abstract

The survey of the epithets used to describe five female figures in the Annales Quedlinburgenses (Matilda of Ringelheim, Adelaide of Burgundy, Theophanu, abbess Matilda and abbess Adelheid) aims at refining the tools for the analysis of the figures in the Nibelungenlied. The examination of the epithets focussed on both vertical and hori- zontal genealogical relationships and to marital relationship proves more fruitful that the one based on adjectival epithets, since the first can highlight relationships which are central to the development of the plot.
