The article focus on current and future use of blockchains and smart contracts in the shipping. In particular, three possible situations are considered: the transmission and the storage of electronic documents, the tracking of goods in the supply chain and the payments through smart contracts. The work aims not only to verify whether the current legislation, governing the contract of carriage of goods by sea, can be applied with regard to the blockchain bill of lading, but also to verify to what extent the current legal framework may represent an obstacle to the development of these new technologies.

Abstract

The article focus on current and future use of blockchains and smart contracts in the shipping. In particular, three possible situations are considered: the transmission and the storage of electronic documents, the tracking of goods in the supply chain and the payments through smart contracts. The work aims not only to verify whether the current legislation, governing the contract of carriage of goods by sea, can be applied with regard to the blockchain bill of lading, but also to verify to what extent the current legal framework may represent an obstacle to the development of these new technologies.
