The historic center of Genoa is the result of constructions, modifications, transformations that have taken place over the centuries, from the Middle Ages to the second post-war period. Several studies have been in the course of the twentieth century in order to know the pre-existing built in the view of urban planning. The most important study is the Cultural Mapping of the Old City, carried out by this University between 1995 and 1999. On this occasion, the complexity of the historic center emerged in its real size. The contribution tries, through examples, to explain the ways in which the city and buildings increase and tries to provide some points of reflection related to: the necessity to define the minimum unit of analysis / intervention; to insert an archiving tool for data, even for buildings that are not protected; to encourage interventions that, in a conscious way, involve several building units; to outline an active role of the municipal administration in the maintenance of assets.
