The electromagnetic transients caused by lightning events are one of the most known causes of faults in the transmission lines. Many papers focused their attention on the evaluation of the effects caused by lightning events on a transmission line, but an overall analysis that takes into account, a real power system is rare to be found. In this paper, the analysis of electromagnetic transients in a connection between a power plant and large power grid is presented with a high detail of the high frequency model for each power system element. In particular, overhead lines, cables, transformers and surge arresters are modelled taking into account all the electromagnetic aspects. The simulations are performed using the well-known code PSCAD-EMTDC, taking into account, different scenarios for the lightning events, and the results show the behaviour of cables and transformers when are subjected to the aforementioned electromagnetic transients with a high level of detail.
