L’Idée constructive en architecture is Ariadne’s thread that traces a narrative path on the history of the construction of domes with several superimposed orders that from St Paul’s Cathedral in London, then passing through Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, the Capitol Dome in Washington, St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg, to finally reach the Basilica of San Gaudenzio in Novara, tells a design and construction path of what can be considered the “new architecture” of the domed structures: the architecture of the superimposed domes. It is a troubling path of design research where mathematics and architecture intertwine and wrap themselves in a dichotomy that develops like a theatrical piece in five acts, and which originates from the intuition of the Marquis Giovanni Poleni regarding the static behavior of Michelangelo’s dome of St. Peter. In 1675, the construction of St Paul’s Cathedral in London began, identifying the annus mirabilis that gave rise to a new modus operandi in the construction of imposing central plan architectures, where the predominant and exalting element of the architectural object is the domed construction system, or rather three domes. It is singular how this important moment in the history of construction, which acts as a watershed between the primacy of the artistic incommensurability of Baroque architecture and the architectural rationality of neoclassicism, sees the task of designing and directing the construction site for the construction of the new London cathedral. From that moment the story unfolds through successive interpretations and architectural, compositional, structural, and material analogies, and where these architectures are the fundamental stages of a journey that will see its “conclusion” in the dome’s construction of the Basilica of S. Gaudenzio by Alessandro Antonelli. Antonelli’s work, while taking up neoclassical themes, will show a new line of design research, more oriented to an Enlightenment-rationalist ideology, where the concepts of arrangement and combination of architectural construction themes take on a character of fundamental importance, and above all where the ostentation of the structural theme takes more and more vigour. It is the conclusion of a cycle of design and construction experiences, but also structural, technical, and technological ones that in little more than two centuries of construction history, has shown - through architecture - the great changes in the science of building and construction techniques, in the use of materials, and in the choice of the type of resistant structures. A play where the actors are the constructive principles, and the scientific theories, but innovative with regard to an architecture consolidated by centuries of “experience” in the construction site, and in which they have found a wide range of applications and experiments. A story made up of technical and constructive innovations but above all of the similarities between architecture and mathematics, and where mathematics becomes architecture and architecture dresses mathematics.
