Abstract

In Havana the presence of farmers in residential areas, as well as in the surrounding suburban countryside, is part of the collective memory of the entire population. With the collapse of the USSR, the Cuban population was called upon to deal urgently with the energy and food crises that occurred in 1994, especially in the metropolitan region of Havana. In this context of radical change, the open spaces are configured as the structuring mould of public garden systems, aquaculture and forestry activities, as well as open-air markets and urban cooperatives, capable of reducing the city’s food dependency on the rural farmlands. Experiences that, have developed and structured on a national level, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Grupo Nacional de Agricultura Urbana (Gnau).
