Abstract

Rural abandonment reflects a post war trend in Western Europe of rural depopulation to which isolated or hardly accessible areas are most vulnerable. Although the debate on designing and planning for more sustainable cities is gaining considerable momentum, the opportunity to foster territorial resilience is highlighted by the current decline of minor municipalities and the potential response to an emergent Euro-Mediterranean challenge: the refugee migration. Successful integration requires a sensitive and holistic approach, which does not ignore but seeks to address new rural regeneration models in two-way process of accommodation (between local communities and migrants), socio-cultural resilience and renewed habits and ways of living the spaces (genius-loci).
