Abstract
The scholium on Od. 4.129 derives the numeral «two» (δύο, δοιοί) from δεῖν (= ἐλλείπειν): 4.129a P. δοιούς: ἀπὸ τοῦ «δέω» τὸ ἐλλείπω· ἐλλιπέστερα γὰρ τὰ δεύτερα ὡς πρὸς τὰ πρῶτά εἰσι. The sentence ἐλλιπέστερα [...] τὰ πρῶτά εἰσι does not mean that, of the first two gifts mentioned, the former (two silver bathtubs) is of greater value than the latter (two tripods), as a perfunctory observer may believe; it does in fact concern the etymology of «two», which, being «second», is defective (δεῖν) compared to «one».File in questo prodotto:
