This paper aims to analyse a crucial episode defined by Arnaldo Momigliano as «the conflict between Paganism and Christianity in Late Antiquity», granting particular attention to the contents concerning History of religion, Philosophy and to the studies of Jan Assmann, an eminent Egyptologist widely known for his work on the transition from polytheism to monotheism. It refers to the struggle – a real political, cultural, religious Streit – which involved the noble Roman Quintus Aurelius Symmachus and the bishop of Milan, Ambrose, in 384 A.D.
