In order to become a source of improvement for the society, design has to acquire a deep knowledge of the features owned by individuals that make up a community. In the present analysis, this topic is applied to the whole humanity. A true knowledge of individuals entails making an accurate study of their history, but also understanding how the human mind works today, with respect to the outer world and itself. This could be achieved by the analysis of some features of our ancestors that are still conditioning our life, as well as by the study of cognitive processes that characterize our present time. More specifically, we should focus on the need, managed by mirror neurons, of matching our current experience with pre-existing information stored in the brain database of experiential memory. To this purpose, it is important to analyze how some features of a new product, such as its shape or appearance, can condition its success. Design is the science that closes the loop of this pathway, as it creates something new, thereby making a foresight for the future. Any innovation has to be mediated by the awareness of its roots in the past. This point is essential for a designer, in order to realize a winning product.
